Injection Environmental Fracturing Cascade Chemistries
A former drum storage area in Huntsville, AL, exhibited significant TCE contamination, with soil and groundwater concentrations reaching hundreds of thousands of parts per billion (ppb) and suspected DNAPL presence. To remediate this, Cascade Environmental conducted a field-scale chemical oxidation pilot test employing integrated pneumatic fracturing and Fenton’s reagent injection to target DNAPL within both the unsaturated and saturated zones.
- Teams utilized a phased approach, beginning with pneumatic fracturing to enhance formation permeability, followed by targeted Fenton's reagent injection to maximize contaminant contact and degradation.
- Following pneumatic fracturing, the team precisely injected phosphoric acid (using ALI and hydraulic methods) to lower in-situ pH below 4 SU, facilitating Fenton's reaction, and subsequently emplaced approximately 8,600 gallons of 5-12% hydrogen peroxide.
